Synopsis: This 47 episode series takes place in the mid 1990’s and follows a young middle school girl named Yuuko Kawai as she faces the challenges of growing up like her first period, first love, etc. The series also follows the relationships between Yuuko and her two best friends Takako and Hiroshi as they face every day school life challenges and events together.
My Thoughts: I wrote a review for this back in March of 2011 but never published it here so I figured I'd go ahead and publish my thoughts on this anime since I do still think about it to this very day. Anyway, I really enjoyed this little anime series from the 90s. This is a series created by Yabuuchi Yuu and I’ve always enjoyed her other works such as Naisho no Tsubomi.
This anime really gives you a sense of what Japan's school life was
like in the 90s and what growing up was like in this awkward stage in life. The animation is all drawn in cell style animation. Gosh do I miss this style of animation. The music was great too. I love how the opening has a jazzy feel
to it. Very different compared to most anime openings these days!
The
characters are all very lovable in their own way and I think that’s part of
the reason why I enjoyed this anime so much. The ending wasn't my favorite tho however. It felt unfinished. I'm assuming it was like that because the manga was probably still publishing at the same time. Otherwise, I did like this a lot! Also definitely a great series to watch during the Valentine's Day season!
My favorite character is Yuuko. Here are some cute screenshots I took of her...
優子ちゃんかわいいよ優子やん!^___^
I watched this anime as the fansubs were coming out for it. Here are some notes I made during those years...
03-22-11: Put on hold until more subs are out.
08-02-11: Picked back up again at ep.16!
08-05-11: On hold til more episodes are out.
10-13-12: One year later, 12 more episodes are available to watch. Will watch them now!
10-27-12: Caught up with the subs at ep.36. Just 11 more episodes to go, hope they finish soon!
01-22-13: Haven't watched anymore Jidai since January. 3 months later,
episodes 39-40 are finally released. Wish this show would get finished
faster. Its so close to being done!
04-27-13: put on hold until the last 7 episodes are out.
4-5-2014: A year later, the show is finally completely released! Took
only about 3 years but whatevs. At least it's done and I'll start
marathoning it tonight. :3
4-14-14: Finally finished this yesterday and it was an amazing series up
until the very end. The ending was terrible. It left me feeling
incomplete and it ended with annoying filler at the end. :/
So yeah, the ending still to this day left me feeling incomplete. I still want more for this series just so I can at least have an ending. I still don't know if I'll ever watch this series again but maybe!
My Ratings:
Art: A
Animation: B
Story: B+
Sub Translations: B
Music/OST: C
Overall
rating: 6/10
Giving this a 6/10 overall rating due to the incomplete ending. It would definitely get a much higher rating if there was an actual ending for this anime. It would be great if this series could get a reboot now that the manga is complete. I'd definitely watch the new anime if there ever was one!
