Anime ReView: Seirei Gensouki aka Spirit Chronicles Season 1

せいれいげんそうき
精霊幻想記

Synopsis: When Haruto Amakawa was 9 years old, he made a promise to his childhood friend Miharu Ayase that they would marry when they grew up. Years have passed and Haruto is now a 20-year-old college student. He unfortunately dies in a traffic accident. Haruto did not expect to wake up in an unfamiliar world in the body of a young boy named Rio. As their memories and personas fuse together, Haruto realizes that he now also possesses magical powers in Rio's body. He is relieved to find that his burning passion for revenge against his mother's murderers has not subsided, despite his newly changed identity.

Not soon after, Rio comes across the kidnapped princess of the Bertram Kingdom and saves her without hesitation with his fighting skills that he learned in his previous life as Haruto. To express his gratitude, the king grants him the opportunity to enroll in the Bertram Royal Academy. Believing this to be a new chapter in his life, he is excited to study at this prestigious academy but life here proves to be difficult for him as a slum-dweller surrounded by the majestic children of nobles.

My Thoughts:
This series instantly grabbed me upon reading from the synopsis. Isekai series are usually a hit or a miss with me but I really liked this one a lot! I liked that there is character growth here and all the good characters are very likeable! I also like that these characters do talk about their past lives with other characters in the series and don't just ignore it. I wish they would apply a bit more of their past lives from Japan in their current life. The only character I disliked was Charles Arbor who is the complete asshole of the series and deserves every punch he gets.

The background music/OST wasn't really anything to write home about. Nothing too memorable which is a shame. An anime's OST is definitely important when it comes to core memory imo. It's one of the things that would make me wanna go back and rewatch a series based on the OST alone. Thankfully though, the OST doesn't take away too much from this anime. The story and the characters are what's most important after all imo. I gotta say, I really love the art style and I really love the main character Haruto/Rio. Celia and Latifa have very cute character designs!

I was able to finish watching this anime in 15 days and I finished it this evening. I like that this series isn't too difficult to follow and is something that you can just have playing in the background or whatever. It's available in English and Japanese audio on Crunchyroll as of the current date of this post. The pacing of this anime was quite nice. It didn't feel too rushed or too dragged out. The manga currently has 10 volumes and it's still ongoing according to Bakaupdates. The light novel is also still ongoing at 26 volumes. This season covers volumes 1~5 of the light novels and volumes 1~7 ch. 32 of the manga. I'll definitely have to read the manga and light novels to get more content of this series. This is definitely a series that has some rewatch value in the future. I guess we'll see if it'll still hold up 10~15 years from now!
