Hello folks! It's been awhile since I've written on this blog. I realized that I've seen a lot of anime in the past 20+ years I've been watching it so I thought it would be a good idea to write about my top 30 favorite kids anime of all time. This is mainly for parents who have children and are interested in showing their kids anime that are safe for them to watch. Before we begin, I thought I'd mention that the list here will be in no particular order. Also, anime with a * next to it means that it has an English dub. Now onward with the list! I will also make note if there's any questionable content in the series for western families.
1. Dragon Ball (1986)*
An anime packed with comedy and adventure, this anime is sure to hold any child's attention span. I know it certainly did for me when I was a kid. I enjoyed watching Goku fly around on his magical flying nimbus cloud, hunting for the 7 dragon balls, and watching him learn new fighting techniques along the way. There is some adult humor that snuck in this series but a lot of it will probably go over your child's head.
2. Himitsu no Kokotama (2015)
This anime has cute little critters that hatch out of eggs with mysterious magical powers and they want to help humans in order to become gods. These little critters are born from items that are special to humans. There's so many of these little gods and it's fun to meet them and watch the mischief they get into. This anime reminds me a lot of Hamtaro. If you're looking for anime that you don't have to think too much about, this is a good one to start with. This anime is very safe for kids. Nothing bad in it.
3. Sugar Sugar Rune (2005)
A magical girl anime about two witches who want to become queen of their world. I particularly enjoyed this anime because there aren't that many anime with witch apprentices. Especially ones that aren't targeted towards a kid friendly audience. The art and music of this anime were especially memorable. Yet another great mindless anime that you can watch and still enjoy at the same time. This anime is very safe for kids to watch. No adult humor or anything sexual. Just good innocent fun for kids.
4. Hamtaro (2000)*
Ah yes, I remember watching this anime back when it aired on Toonami and now my 5 year old niece enjoys this anime as well. It's a cute story about little Hamsters who call themselves the Ham-Hams. They go on crazy adventures around the neighborhood while their owners are away from the house going about their daily lives. This anime doesn't have any adult humor that snuck in. So it's great for kids of any age to watch.
A story that takes place in the 22nd Century. A group of kids are out on a school field trip to another planet, a mistake occurs accidentally throws them into a space gravity storm. They end up landing on an uninhabited planet and the kids must learn to find a way to survive on it. This anime has to be one of my favorite kid shows. I remember breezing through this show in just 2 days. I enjoyed watching this group of kids go out on adventures and survive on an uninhabited planet. Yet another safe anime for kids to watch with nothing bad in it.
6. Chi's Sweet Home (2008)
About a cute little kitten who gets lost while on a walk with her mama cat then finds a new family to live with. She gets into mischief and goes on fun adventures in the neighborhood. I absolutely love this anime. My 5 year old niece loves this one as well. The only down fall is that this anime does not have an English dub so you may have to read the subtitles for your little one. Though that didn't stop me or my niece from enjoying this cute series.
7. Hana no Mahou Tsukai Mary Bell (1992)
A cutesy magical girl anime series about a girl named Mary Bell who looks about the age of 5 or 6, comes to the human world to help encourage people by using her flower magic.
8. Pokemon (1997)*
It's no doubt that unless you've been living under a rock, Pokemon is a great anime for children. I grew up watching this series in the late 90's and still love it to this day. I still remember watching this show right after school on Fox Kids. Filled with so much fun and adventure in each episode. I enjoyed watching Ash and his friends catch Pokemon and help friends along the way on their journeys.
9. Monster Rancher (1999)*
Yet another great show that used to air on Fox Kids. I remember enjoying watching this show as a child as well. It was fun watching Genki get zapped into the world of his favorite video game and going off on adventures in that world. I remember this show made me wish I would get zapped into the world of Pokemon haha.
10. Doraemon (1979)
Doraemon (pronounced Dorah eh mon) is another great show for children. It's been airing in Japan since the 70's though it sadly never made it to the States. Personally, I never watched it as a child though I knew of it once I knew what anime was. Now that we have the internet (a blessing from the lord jesus) and fansubs, I finally found some subtitled copies of the Doraemon movies. I have enjoyed watching every single one thus far. Each story is magical and fun to watch. Doreamon is very much like what 90's Disney used to be. It's great for all ages.
11. Fushigiboshi no Futagohime (2005)
A great children's anime targeted for young girls. About twin princesses named Fine and Rein who have to save the mysterious planet's sun from weakening. I remember enjoying this series back in high school when it came out. The series was funny, the art is extremely cute, and overall just a fun relaxing show to watch.
12. Digimon Digital Monsters (1999)*
Here is yet another popular kids anime from the 90's. I remember watching this show on Fox Kids thinking it was a complete rip off of Pokemon. Though once I began watching it, I actually enjoyed this anime quite a bit!
13. Hime-Chan no Ribbon (1992)
This anime is filled with fantasy, magic, and a side bit of coming of age romance. Hime-Chan becomes a magical girl from a girl named Erika (princess of the magic kingdom) who gives her a magical item. There is no profanity
14. Yumeiro Pâtissière (2009)
An anime about making delicious sweets. This anime is mostly targeted towards girls but it's a great kids anime for those who enjoy cutesy characters and tasty looking sweets. I really enjoyed watching these characters grow as a Pâtissière. At the end of each episode, there is a live action clip of a real Japanese Pâtissière making treats that were seen in each episode.
15. Yokai Watch (2014)*
This anime is about Amano Keita who wants to live his life as a normal boy in school. Though one day, he encounters Whisper, a yokai butler. Whisper becomes Keita's yokai butler who guides Keita about all the yokai who are causing mischief in the neighborhood or at school. I've seen about half of this anime and this anime is a great show for boys or girls. This anime has comedy, adventure, and supernatural. It also has a great soundtrack to go along with it.
16. MÄR Heaven (2005)
About a young boy named Ginta who dreams of a magical world every night. He tells his only friend Koyuki about his dreams there and she's the only one who believes him. One day, Ginta's dreams do come true and a large door summons him into the world he has been dreaming about. I remember thoroughly enjoying this anime. It had tons of adventure, action, and bits of comedy. A great anime for people of all ages.
17. One Piece (1999)*
Ah yes, One Piece! About a young man who wishes to become king of the pirates. Yet another series that's extremely popular with kids. The series has been going strong since 1999 and new episodes are still coming out weekly in Japan. This anime is filled with adventure, comedy, action, and tons of fun.
Naruto has been popular ever since the anime was released in 2002 and I'm sure by this point, almost everyone knows about this series. The anime is still going strong in 2018 with a new sequel series called Boruto. I remember people of all ages in the early 00's enjoying this anime quite a bit. There is some adult humor in this anime but not the same level as Dragon Ball.
19. Yu-Gi-Oh (2000)*
This is the second season of Yu-Gi-Oh and is probably what made the series as popular as it is today. The franchise has at least 7 seasons as of 2018. I remember enjoying this anime and many of my friends growing up around this time when it came out did too.
The Pretty Cure franchise has been going strong since 2004. Every year, begins a new season with new precure's. In this particular season, two young witches are on a journey to find a jewel with strong powers known as the Link Stone Emerald. Based on the art, you can probably tell it's targeted towards young girls but boys and girls of all ages enjoy this franchise. I recommend watching all seasons of Pretty Cure.
21. Sonic X (2003)*
As a huge Sonic fan growing up in the 90's, this is by far a must watch for any kid who is a fan of the Sonic franchise. I grew up watching the American cartoons (Adventures of Sonic and Sonic SATAM) and I remember this series being quite good. It was awesome seeing Sonic as an anime with a whole new adventure.
22. Card Captor Sakura (1998)*
This series is about a 10 year old fourth grade girl named Sakura Kishimoto who stumbles upon a mysterious book containing a set of cards. However, they aren't just ordinary cards, they possess incredible powers that pose a great danger upon the world and Sakura must prevent the cards from causing trouble! This anime was actually quite popular in the late 90's and early 00's and it's still popular to this day. Keep in mind, in the original Japanese version, there is some gay romance or hints of it in this. I won't say who but it's with some of the main characters. The 90s English dubbed version of this series completely omits all of that stuff. So if you want the censored version for your kids, you'll want to have them watch the original 90s English dub. Tbh, the og 90s dub had much better acting than the newer, modern dub.
Another classic anime that aired on TV back in the 90's. The one thing that struck to me as the most memorable about this show was the art style, the American TV opening, as well as the main character, Genshi. This anime is funny, and has a ton of adventure to go along with it.
24. Hoshi no Kirby (2001)*
Whether you're a fan of the video games or comics, Kirby is definitely a great choice for any kid to watch.
25. Shugo Chara (2007)
Yet another anime that has a young female target audience. This series is perfect for preteens or older. This anime has cute little guardian characters that help the main character, Amu Hinamori, become her would be self. This anime is magical and funny and is a great watch for people of all ages.
26. Dinosaur King (2007)*
There aren't very many anime out there that feature dinosaurs. This anime actually has the same voice actress who did Ash Ketchum from Pokemon.
27. Peter Pan no Bouken (1989)
So far as we know, this was the only Peter Pan series that was ever made in Japan. The story is just the same as the one we know from the classic Disney animated film.
28. Heybot!
This anime follows the two bokyabots, Heybot and the Yurui Prince, Nejiru. They collect different screws and when the Bokyabots wear the Bokya Neji screws on their heads, they're able to compete in battles. This anime is a fun sci-fi comedy targeted towards young boys though I think girls would find this show funny as well.
29. Ojamajo DoReMi (1999)*
Also known as Magical DoReMi in the United States, Ojamajo DoReMi is about 3 young girls, Doremi, Aiko, and Hazuki. Doremi is the unluckiest girl in the world who faces many issues in her life. One day, Doremi bumps into a real witch and becomes a witch apprentice. This anime is magical, funny, and filled with adventure.
30. Onmyou Taisenki (2004)
Onmyou Taisenki is a very underrated kids show. Not many people seem to know about this one. It's got a bit of supernatural, adventure, fantasy, and all that good stuff. What I found particularly memorable about this anime is the music, art style, and characters. I has kind of a historic background to it which is interesting. It still holds my attention and I still think about this anime to this day and it's great for people of all ages to watch.
And that pretty much wraps up this list! I decided to mix it up in terms of gender target audience because I enjoy both. Now I'm sure I'm probably missing a bunch of other anime. Though I'll very likely update this list and end up doing a top 50 as I continue to watch more anime series. So I will have to save the unmentioned series until then. Some I have not watched all the way through but I still put them on because I remember thoroughly enjoying what I had seen. Eventually, I do plan on watching what I haven't seen yet. Anyway, thank you all for checking out this post. I do plan on continuing to post stuff like this in the future. So please stay tuned for more. :)
